If you’re not a native speaker of English, or English is not your first language, you will have to prove English proficiency before being admitted to a British university. Most universities allow you to prove proficiency either by proof of enrollment in an English course for a certain period of time (around 1 year), work (must have worked for around 1.5 years in an environment where English is the primary language spoken), or tests.
Tests that are usually accepted are the following:
TOEFL
GCSE in English Language
British Council International English Language Testing System
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English
International General Certifical of Secondary Education; English as a Second Language
Pitman Examination in English for Speakers of other languages
International Baccalaureate
Check with the university you are applying to in order to find out what marks are needed on the above tests for admissions consideration.
