Contract Mechanical Design Engineer

The Role

As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for organising and managing the mechanical design of projects, and for performing acceptable quality and quantity of work delegated to you by the Engineering Manager. This contract will be for a minimum of 4-6 months.

Main Responsibilities:
• Responsible for designing the project within the specification of the customer, while keeping the number of hours to a minimum, adopting the philosophy of “think frugal”
• As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for keeping the drawing list updated and controlling the design documents at all stages of the project, allowing a reliable audit trail to be kept, delivering a complete set of drawings to the Project Manager at the start of the build phase of the project.
• During the build phase the Mechanical Design Engineer will assist the Project Engineers, as requested by the Engineering Manager.
• On completion of the project the Mechanical Design Engineer will complete all “as built” prints and perform an accurate job closing on the project.
• The Mechanical Design Engineer will monitor against the agreed targets for the design, the time remaining to the delivery date of the design, carrying out necessary remedial action to ensure that the design is delivered to the agreed design delivery date and that the build or development period of the project is not shortened.
• To source and price, as agreed, key bought out items for each project, and to work with the Project Manager to ensure that any time critical components are delivered to the project bar chart.

The Candidate
• You will have completed an apprenticeship or degree in Engineering
• 5 years’ experience and time in a design office
• Must have experience of 3D design on Solidworks software
• Must have experience of 2D layout design on and AutoCAD software
• Experience of designing within an automation company, special purpose machinery business or a conveyor/materials handling business is preferable
• The ideal candidate will be able to sketch an idea on the spot if required.
