Graduate Takes Legal Action Against Government

A graduate from the University of Birmingham- one of the top universities in the UK, is suing the British government after she claims a scheme of theirs forces people to do unpaid work. Cait Reilly is a geology graduate who was made to work for free at a Poundland store in Birmingham for two weeks, or face losing her unemployment benefits.

Despite attending an institution that is regularly placed high up in UK university ranking tables, she has been unemployed since graduating. As part of a government scheme, the 22-year-old was encouraged to do pre-employment training and a work placement with the expectation of an interview at the end.

However, the placement was not related to her chosen career in any way and she did not even get an interview at the end of the two weeks. The scheme has been introduced as graduate unemployment continues to increase and jobs in London for students continue to falter.
