Get the Olympics Party Started

Foreign Students's picture

After seven years of planning, the London 2012 Olympics are finally officially starting tonight with the Opening Ceremony taking place at the brand new Olympics Stadium in Stratford. Whilst there will be 80,000 spectators there in the stadium, there will be millions (possibly even billions) more watching at home on TV. It will all be kicking off at 9pm tonight and is being shown live on BBC 1.

What better way for you to start the Olympics than by having an Opening Ceremony party? Gather your friends in front of a TV and make it a night to remember (or not, depending on the amount of alcohol drunk). Here we have gathered some of the very best ideas for Olympics parties.

Make Sure You're Food and Drink is Themed

Olympic Cakes

The BuzzFeed website has a brilliant list of 52 different tips for hosting an Olympics party. However, most of their suggestions revolve around making sure food and drink are multi-coloured. Some of our favourites include making Olympic torches out of popcorn and ice cream cones, baking some Olympic rings cakes (as seen above from oopseydaisyblog.com) and making Gold medal cookies. So, you better get baking and drinks making now, you haven't got much time! See all 52 tips here...

Wear Funny Glasses

Olympic Glasses

For some reason one of the recommendations on the official London 2012 website is to print off some strange paper glasses and wear them during the Opening Ceremony. We have no idea why, but who are we to challenge the official site. If you like the look of the glasses above and want a pair of your own, you can print them out here...

Play a Drinking Game

Olympics Drinking

The rules above are for a drinking game for the Opening Ceremony. Drinking games are a staple of student life and make almost anything fun, so for an event this big it's bound to be entertaining. However, we think there a few rules here that could make things messy very quickly. Drinking two fingers every time Team GB is mentioned looks especially dangerous. Click here to see rules...

Play Opening Night Bingo

Olympics Bingo

Another one from the official London 2012 site this one, but a little better than ‘wear comedy glasses'. They've created Opening Ceremony bingo. Basically you choose a mixture of things that you're likely to see during the ceremony- country names, flags, famous athletes, teams or fireworks for example, and then watch out carefully for them. The first person to see all their things, shouts out bingo and wins. Simple but fun. Get full rules here...

So there we have some suggestions for you. Whatever you plan to do, make sure you have an amazing night and just enjoy the celebrations. The Opening Ceremony marks what should be a brilliant three weeks, not just in London, but throughout the world.
