London is by far one of the most exciting, biggest and most diverse cities in the world. Therefore if you are lucky enough to study at university there, you're bound to have an incredible time. However, as it is so vast, it can be a little overwhelming at times to fresher's, but fresher's week is arguably the best week of your student experience!

Therefore we've put together some tips for spending fresher's week in London, regardless of which of the city's 45 higher education institutions you're at, to make sure you have an amazing time.

Go to your university's fresher's fair

Fresher's week isn't all about the parties and the alcohol; it's the main chance for you to get to know the people behind your university and to get involved in things like uni societies. Head to your uni's fresher's fair where you can sign up to societies, chat to members of your student union, nab a load of freebies from local businesses and ask any questions you may have regarding your chosen city/uni.

Get clued up on all the local events

Most unis and cities in general will organise lots of fresher's events and nights in clubs, and it's a good idea to find out what they are so you can organise going to them with your new friends. There's lots of useful stuff online for finding out what's happening in fresher's week in London 2014 so spend some time researching. If clubbing isn't your thing, London has loads of other things to offer it's fresher's too, including late-night ‘lock-ins' at many of its clothes stores for students, complete with discounts which is great.

Take the time to get to know people in your student halls

Student accommodation in London can have a great social atmosphere that makes getting to know people a breeze, but make sure you make the extra effort to get chatting to your housemates and neighbours, especially in this first week so you can meet as many people as possible and try new things as a group.

Plan a budget and aim to stick to it

London has a reputation for being a really pricey city to live in, but as long as you're careful, you can easily do it on a budget. Fresher's week can be quite expensive due to the fact that there's so much to do, so it's a good idea to set yourself a realistic budget and try to stick to it as much as possible so that you don't end up left with no money at the end of the week!

Look after yourself and stay safe

It's important to ensure that you look after yourself in this week especially as you won't want to miss out on any of the fun! Avoid getting run down by having lots of rest and eating well. Also keep your wits about you when out and about in London as, like with any major city, crime can be a problem, but as long as you stay vigilant and look after yourself, you'll be fine.
