Excitement in the UK is building as the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics is gathering pace. Last night the full schedule for the world’s biggest sporting event was released, and from March 15th anyone can start applying for tickets.

Here are a few of the expected highlights:

  • The Opening Ceremony (27th July): Directed by British film maker Danny Boyle, the official opening of the 2012 Olympics is bound to be spectacular. Expect fireworks, celebrities and a global audience of up to 4 billion!
  • A bit of everything (4th August): There are a massive 25 medals being handed out on this Saturday alone, in sports including triathlon, cycling, swimming, tennis and rowing.
  • Athletics (5th August): Watch Usain Bolt run in the men’s 100m final, or else head out in to the streets of London to see the women’s marathon for free.
  • The Closing Ceremony (12th August): This will mark the end of a very busy and hopefully brilliant few weeks and pass the Olympic flag onto the 2016 hosts- Rio, in Brazil.

If you are hoping to get tickets to see some of these events (or any of the hundreds of others), then you first have to sign up here. Then, from the 15th March, you can apply for tickets at the same place if you are from the UK or EU, or from your own country's site if you are from outside Europe.

For one month you can apply for up to 20 events, before the tickets are then chosen at random from everyone who has applied and the lucky people are told which tickets they have been given.
