UK Student Travel News (24/8/11)

Here you can find the latest UK student travel news headlines for the week ending the 24th August 2011:

Increase in Foreign Owned Travel Companies Expected

22nd August 2011: Two thirds of travel businesses expect more and more foreign owned UK travel companies to pop up over the next decade. A survey by Barclays Corporate showed that 64% of the 664 businesses interviewed believe that the UK will be a better place to do business in 2021.

A massive 79% also said that they expect foreign ownership of UK companies to increase. This was backed up by Barclays Head of Travel, Chris Lee, who said:

"The UK has been a hub for foreign direct investment for more than two decades, with increasing numbers of airlines choosing the UK and its major cities as their route of choice."

In terms of student travelling, the increases in travel businesses will create a greater competitiveness between student travel agencies, therefore hopefully reducing the prices of buses and coaches, and student travel insurance.

Travel Chaos Expected Over bank Holiday

24th August 2011: Experts are expecting one of the busiest travelling weekends of the year in the UK this Bank Holiday as millions are planning short breaks away. Driving in the UK will be particularly bad, with up to 16million cars expected to be on the roads. Not only is it a Bank Holiday weekend, but there are also numerous festivals going on, including Reading and Leeds music festivals and Notting Hill Carnival. A student travel top tip is to definitely use London public transport if you are planning on going to the Carnival.

However, if you are planning to travel longer distances within the UK and expect to miss the traffic by using UK trains, then you may not be much better off. Engineering work is taking place on many of the rail lines around the country, with a total of 3,428 replacement buses running over the holiday weekend.
