University Student Accommodation Plans Rejected

22nd July 2011: The University of Chester, near Manchester, have had plans to build a huge new student accommodation block within its main campus rejected by the Cheshire West & Chester Council. The building would have provided both UK and international student accommodation for 203 of the University's students in a flat-roofed, part four storey, part five storey building.

However, local residents, the Chester Civic Trust and the council's spatial planning department all objected to the design of the building. The planning application was refused by nine votes to one as the council did not see how the design's scale and massing fitted in with the Chester district local plan.

New Sheffield Student Accommodation Planned

25th July 2011: Plans for a huge new student ‘village' on the outskirts of the Sheffield city centre have been revealed. The £52 million project would provide accommodation in Sheffield for 880 students mainly from the University of Sheffield. If the scheme is approved by councilors, the ‘student village' would "regenerate the surrounding neighbourhood" and create 130 permanent full-time jobs as well as a further 300 during construction.

East Yorkshire-based Manor Property Group are behind the plan, and already own large Manchester student homes and similar student accommodation in Hull, Leeds, Bradford, Birmingham and Durham.

New Plans for Student Accommodation in London

25th July 2011: Plans for a huge mixed-use building in Vauxhall, London are to be submitted for planning permission this Autumn. The ‘Spring Mews' project will include 408-bed student accommodation and a 120-bed budget hotel at an expected cost of £50 million. What's more, the scheme includes a whole array of extras that will benefit student living, such as 30,000 sq ft of shopping units and 50,000 sq ft of offices, as well as a replacement community centre.

The proposed building will compliment a much larger development half a mile away that will include a £250m mixed-use area with two towers and an aerial walkway.
The proposed accommodation will benefit the students studying in London at institutions such as City University, King's College London and London Metropolitan University, all of which need accommodation for international students.
