Shine! International Student Awards Winner Announced

Last Wednesday, the UK’s brightest and best international students gathered in London for the Shine! 2011 International Student Awards ceremony. Every year the Shine! Awards celebrate international students and what they bring to the UK.

Rather than focus on the academic side of things, they instead act as a way for students to tell the inspirational stories from their time studying in the UK.

This year’s 12 regional finalists all travelled to London last week to attend a glamorous awards ceremony hosted by BBC Radio 1 DJ Nihal and TV presenter Angelica Bell. After a drinks reception and dinner with some of the most important educational figures in Britain (including ForeignStudents.com of course!), the overall 2011 winner was announced.

This year, the honour (and a £2,000 prize) went to UCL student James Xi Xu from China. In typically modest fashion, James then spent much of his acceptance speech focussing on the other finalists:

“I never expected to win tonight. When I see the achievements of the other regional finalists it makes me feel humble – I am in awe of them.”

We were at the awards to capture his acceptance speech on video, as you can see above.
