UK Student Travel News (27/7/11)

Here you can find the latest UK student travel news headlines for the week ending the 27th July 2011:

Budget Flights to Increase in Price

26th July 2011: Increases in fuel prices are going to drive up the cost of airline flights by up to 12% by the end of 2012, the Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary admitted. Fuel prices have risen by 49%, costing Ryanair £123 million more than planned in 2010, but the company expects to be able to recoup much of this increase in costs through baggage fees at the airports and sales of in-flight food and drink.

The increases will be felt by budget airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet, both of which are favourites of students travelling in Europe on a budget.

Brits Travel in their Millions to Spain

26th July 2011: Figures have revealed that this year, Spain is very much the destination of choice for Brits going on holiday abroad. In the first 6 months of 2011, almost 6 million people visited the country, with 1.5 million travelling there last month alone.

The Spanish tourist board revealed that a quarter of all visitors to Spain come from the UK, which is more than any other nation, followed by Germany, France and Italy.

Islands off the coast of the mainland have been particularly popular, including places such as Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza, which are traditionally top student travelling destinations for those looking to travel in Europe on a student budget.

Travel Chaos shows Need for Travel Insurance

27th July 2011: a survey has revealed that since the start of 2010 one in seven Britons have experienced problems whilst travelling. Problems such as ash clouds, industrial action and political unrest have all led to a total of 7 million people having their plans disrupted in the last 18 months. Of these, 800,000 have experienced at least seven days of delays, leading to a suggested loss of £2.1 billion as a direct result of flights being delayed or cancelled.

The survey was carried out by Sainsbury's Travel Insurance, and a spokesman advised:

"travel insurance can offer another useful source of reimbursement for costs incurred if you shop around for policies that offer a good level of cover."

This is particularly important for student travelling and travel in Europe on a student budget, as paying for hotels or hostels because your flight is delayed can get very expensive.
