Rome: A Student Travel Guide

One of the best things about living in the UK is how quick, easy and cheap it is to get to mainland Europe. For short weekend breaks there are so many options it can be hard to decide where to go. To help you out we are creating a series of guides to places in Europe that are perfect for short holidays. If you have been anywhere exciting in Europe and want to write a short guide, then please get in contact with us. Below, Cuban student Maria gives her guide to Rome.

Rome, Italy

When I visited Rome for the first time last summer, I was convinced it was the most beautiful city in the world (after my native Havana). Now, just after my second visit, I can confirm my initial perception. During the last few days, I have wandered in the world's largest open-air museum, taking in some much appreciated sun and probably gained a few pounds off the best food out there. Here are some tips for a budget-friendly student trip to the capital of Italy based on my own experiences.

A Beautiful Day in Cambridge

A few months ago I participated in an International Students House Travel Club day trip to Cambridge. After a short minivan ride from London, our group of 13 international students arrived to a quaint little city dominated by gothic and red-brick university buildings. There were many churches, cozy coffeeshops, parked bikes everywhere and quiet courtyards full of the greenest grass and autumn flowers. For students, this was heaven.

Our first stop was the main street in front of King's College (pictured above). Our guide gave us about an hour to explore our surroundings before the official tour started.

Bruges: A Student Travel Guide

Bruges, Belgium

Bruges, in Belgium, is a picturesque town full of original architecture and stunning ancient churches.

Getting There

Bruges is so easy to get to by train. From London St Pancras you can take the Eurostar all the way to Brussels, where you change to get a direct train to Bruges station. The whole journey takes less than 3 hours and is relatively cheap (around £50 return) if you book well in advance.

Accommodation

The best place to stay in Bruges is probably in one of the dozens of Bed and Breakfasts. For around 40 Euros per person per night, you can find a very comfortable room in the centre of town. You can search for B&Bs in Bruges here.
