The Great Downing Street Cat Fight

As the famous home of the British prime minister and chancellor, Downing Street is used to seeing its fair share of disagreements. However, this week has seen one slightly different to your regular political scrap.

Photos have emerged of chancellor George Osborne's cat Freya, attacking David Cameron's Larry (pictured above). Downing Street have even released a statement on it, with the prime minister's spokeswoman claiming the two animals are able to co-exist, but she would not "get into commenting on the adventures of our feline friends".

It is tradition for the prime minister to own a cat at 10, Downing Street, whose main duties are to keep any mice away. Indeed, Larry was ‘hired' last year after a rat was seen scurrying past 10, Downing Street during a live TV broadcast. However, after shirking his duties- preferring a long sleep, George Osborne's Freya has been brought in to help out.

Pensioner Destroys Spanish Fresco

A pensioner's restoration of a fresco that has adorned the wall of a Spanish church for more than a century has become an internet sensation. The famous painting of Jesus Christ by artist Elias Garcia Martinez had been deteriorating for years until 81-year-old Cecilia Gimenez decided to do something about it.

The results can be seen above. On the left is the original, whilst on the right is the hilarious attempted restoration. The new version has swept the internet, with people likening it to anything from a bear to Chewbacca from Star Wars. Indeed, even the BBC correspondent Christian Fraser described how it "resembles a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic".

After starting her masterpiece, the elderly woman soon realised she was a little out of her depth and contacted her city councillor in charge of cultural affairs. Luckily he was sympathetic to her attempts:

"I think she had good intentions. Next week she will meet with a repairer and explain what kind of materials she used. If we can't fix it, we will probably cover the wall with a photo of the painting."

Since appearing on British news sites, a number of famous paintings have been given the same treatment. What do you think of these? An improvement?

US Government Denies Existence of Mermaids

Mermaids are up there with unicorns and dragons as some of the best known mythical creatures, yet a US government agency recently felt the need to officially deny their existence. This rather unusual step was taken after a fictional TV programme was mistaken by some viewers as factual.

It all started when the Discovery Channel aired ‘Mermaids: The Body Found' in May. As the press release detailed, the tongue-in-cheek programme painted "a wildly convincing picture of the existence of mermaids, what they may look like and why they've stayed hidden...until now".

However, some easily fooled viewers took the show as a factually accurate documentary and wrote to the National Ocean Service asking about the creatures. This led the agency to post an article on its educational website last week entitled: "No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found".

On following the story up, the BBC managed to get a quite brilliant quote from National Ocean Service spokeswoman Carol Kavanagh, who clarified "we don't have a mermaid science programme".
